Street Sweep is a semi-annual, Student-Government-led community service event that seeks to beautify the city of Scranton. It is a campus-wide event open to all students. Students are encouraged to sign up with clubs as well as individually since this is a wonderful opportunity for clubs to complete service hours together. Student Government also gives out t-shirts to the first 200 students who show up.
This is an event that is organized and coordinated by the Director of Communications. At the event, Senators lead groups of students to either clean up the streets and Downtown or volunteer at community gardens located in the Hill Section. Last year, for the Fall 2016 Street Sweep, students cleaned up five-block sections (Mulberry to Myrtle Street) starting at Madison Avenue and ending all the way up at Prescott Street. Additionally, three groups of students also cleaned up at the Myrtle Street Garden, Vine Street Garden, and Hill Neighborhood Association.
Street Sweep is a fantastic opportunity for students to become more involved in the surrounding city, not just as students at a university but as adults who recognize their role in a community. The event has grown immensely since its start. Last fall, nearly 700 students volunteered and the participation is expected to continue to increase.
